Key Takeaways

  • The PPF process runs consultation → color selection → surface prep → installation → curing → aftercare.
  • Surface prep (decontamination and paint correction) decides 80% of the final look — film locks in whatever is underneath.
  • A full-vehicle color PPF wrap typically takes 3–5 working days; a partial front-end job can be done in a day.
  • You choose coverage, color and finish; the shop owns the clean-bay technique, plotting and edge work.
  • The film is reversible and backed by a 10-year warranty — unlike a repaint, you can change color later without stripping the factory paint.

What the PPF Process Actually Covers

A lot of first-time buyers picture PPF as "stick a clear film on the car." In practice it is a staged workflow where each step protects the next. Skip or rush one, and the result shows it. The sequence below is what a trained PALTRIX installer follows — it applies to both clear protection film and Color PPF, because colored film goes through the same prep and the same laying technique, just with pigment in the TPU.

PALTRIX Color PPF — the film being installed

Material: TPU
Thickness: 7.5 mil
Width: 60 in (1524 mm)
Roll length: 50 ft (15.24 m)
Warranty: 10 years
Top coat: self-healing + hydrophobic
UV resistance: Excellent
Stain resistance: Excellent

The Six Stages, Step by Step

1

Consultation & Vehicle Assessment

The shop inspects the paint, talks through your goals, and agrees a coverage plan. This is where you decide how much of the car gets film.

  • Full wrap — every painted panel, for maximum protection and a full color change.
  • Track / front-end pack — bumper, hood, fenders, mirrors, rockers: the impact zones.
  • High-impact only — minimal coverage for lease return or light daily driving.

They also flag existing paint defects, so you know what will and will not be corrected before film goes on.

2

Color & Finish Selection

With coverage set, you pick the look. PALTRIX offers 200+ colors across seven finish families — solid, metallic, matte, pearl, carbon, chameleon and crystal. Use the online Studio to preview shades on your model, and request physical swatches before committing. Color choice is reversible later, but picking it well up front saves a redo.

3

Surface Preparation

This is the most underrated stage. The film is optically clear, so it reveals everything beneath it. The shop washes, decontaminates (iron remover, clay), and performs paint correction (machine polish) to remove swirls and embedded contaminants. Film laid over untreated defects locks them in for the life of the wrap.

4

Film Installation

Patterns are plotted and cut for your specific panels, then the film is floated on with a slip solution, squeegeed to remove water, and heat-formed around curves. Edges are wrapped or tucked so there is no lifted lip. This is the precision part — it is why PPF is installed by trained shops, not applied like a sticker. The full step-by-step installation guide covers the technique in detail.

5

Curing & Inspection

After laying, the water under the film needs to evaporate. Most setups cure in 24–72 hours depending on temperature and humidity. The shop re-inspects edges, checks for trapped bubbles or "fingering," and confirms the top coat is sitting flat. You should not wash or pressure-spray during this window.

6

Aftercare Handoff

Once cured, you get wash guidance and warranty registration. Hand wash with pH-neutral soap, avoid abrasive brushes, and the self-healing top coat will take care of light swirls with warmth. Many owners add a ceramic topper for easier cleaning — optional, not required.

How Long the Whole Process Takes

Time is driven by coverage and complexity, not by the film itself. A rough guide:

CoverageTypical timeNotes
Front-end / track pack1 daySingle-day job; car returned next morning.
High-impact + rockers1–2 daysMore panels, more edge work.
Full color PPF wrap3–5 daysIncludes full prep and cure time; plan to be without the car.
Complex / exotic body5+ daysDeep curves, bespoke edges, multiple colors.

What You Decide vs What the Shop Handles

A clean process has a clear split of responsibility. Knowing it stops arguments later.

  • You decide: coverage area, color, finish, whether to wrap edges, and aftercare products.
  • The shop owns: the clean bay, dust control, pattern plotting, slip-solution mix, squeegee pressure, heat forming, and edge detailing.
  • Both confirm: existing paint defects, the cure window, and warranty registration before you drive off.

A note on the commitment

PPF is a decision you can undo, not a permanent one like a repaint — but it is still a commitment. Lock the color with physical swatches, confirm coverage and edge wrapping in writing, and respect the cure window. Do that, and the film looks its best on day one and ages gracefully across its 10-year warranty. The prep you approve at stage three is what the car shows for the life of the wrap.

Before You Arrive: Drop-Off Day Prep

The smoothest installs start before the car is on the lift. A little prep on your side lets the shop spend its time on film, not on surprises.

  • Wash the car a day or two before — but skip wax and any ceramic topper, so the decon step isn't fighting a coating.
  • Log existing damage in writing (door dings, stone chips, clear-coat scratches). The shop should note these at intake so there is no confusion later.
  • Decide on badges and trim — some owners de-badge for a cleaner wrap. Confirm what the shop will remove and refit.
  • Bring your swatch decision (or confirm the Studio preview) so the right roll is plotted, not guessed.
  • Plan to be without the car for the agreed window — a full wrap is 3–5 working days, not an afternoon.

Hand the shop a one-page brief: vehicle, coverage plan, color, finish, and any panels you want left裸 (for example a matte hood on an otherwise gloss car). It keeps stage one and stage four aligned.
